Cape Town’s cheesecake hotspot celebrates their first birthday

The Sweet Cillie’s Cakery and Deli, situated on the bustling Tokai Road opposite the Blue Route Mall, is celebrating their first birthday in September.

Sweet Cillie’s is undoubtedly the best spot in Cape Town to enjoy a slice of cheesecake and offers a dozen different varieties – including the all-time classic New York cheesecake, alongside Praline, Chai, Brownie, Red velvet, Carrot, Peanut butter, Pumpkin, Caramel, Oreo, Lemon and Nougat.

Cilla De Jonge (affectionately known as Cillie),the owner and baker at Sweet Cillie’s explains that her warm and welcoming cakery and deli is renowned for its baked cheesecakes, which she makes herself, from scratch, fresh everyday.

Ever since the dawn of time, mankind has striven to create the perfect cheesecake. (The earliest history of the art is lost, but we know that cheesecake was already a popular dish in ancient Greece.)  It could be argued that Cilla De Jonge has mastered the perfect cheesecake.

The September birthday celebrations at Sweet Cillie’s sees this popular venue offering  great specials – kicking off on 1 September from 9am with a slice of delicious cheesecake and a cup of coffee for R35.  Throughout September customers can enjoy quiche and coffee on weekday mornings for R40 (from 7:30am until 9:00am).  On Wednesday’s pop in and enjoy tea for two with the age-old favourite:  scones with jam and cream for only R65.  On Thursday’s patrons can savour a steaming cappuccino with cake for R50 and on Friday’s be sure to take home Cillie’s mixed pack of six decadent cupcakes for R120 – a perfect treat for the weekend or a Friday wrap up at work.

As part of the Spring first birthday celebrations, Sweet Cillies will also be launching a new range of “loaded” waffles – packed high with chocolate, brownies and more.

Favouring lashings of fresh farm butter, eggs and cream like grandmother used to use when baking, Cillie says her baking style is American – unsurprising given that she lived in America for several years with her husband before returning to South Africa.

Cillie supplied the Blaauwklippen and Lourensford markets with her cheesecakes for several years before making the decision to open a retail outlet cakery with a permanent address.  She has not looked back since.

“My vision was for a welcoming venue where moms can come and relax, where friends can catch up, where small business owners can come an unwind and let their creative processes flow or just check their emails in a warm and happy space – we offer free wi-fi to cater for this.  All accompanied by delicious baked treats and a great cup of coffee or tea,” says Cillie.  “Our first year has been a great success and we look forward to welcoming everyone to Sweet Cillie’s to join us in celebrating.”
