Official Kick-off to the Harvest Season

Celebrate with the Wine Harvest Commemorative Event The 2026 Wine Harvest Commemorative Event returns on Thursday, 5 February 2026, inviting the public to experience one of the most meaningful traditions in South African wine. Hosted at Groot Constantia, South Africa’s oldest wine-producing farm, the evening marks an important national milestone: 367 years since the first recorded wine was made from Cape grapes on 2 February 1659. The Wine Harvest Commemorative Event is the official kick-off to the harvest season. It’s the event where the journey of the South African wine industry, from local vineyards to glasses around the world, is celebrated with pride. Each year, this grand gathering pays tribute to the people, passion, and progress behind our wine heritage. The event unfolds across Groot Constantia’s lawns and iconic Cape Dutch buildings, surrounded by vineyards and mountain views. Guests can expect an elegant, black-tie celebration with beautifully decorated tables, twinkling lights, top-class wines, live entertainment, and the highlight of the night, the traditional blessing of the new harvest. It is a rare opportunity to share an evening with winemakers, cellar teams, sommeliers, and peers from across the industry, all gathered to honour the beginning of a new season. At the centre of the night is a moment that defines the event and captures the heart and spirit of South African wine, when exceptional contributors to the industry are honoured for their achievements. Each year, individuals and organisations are recognised in five prestigious categories, representing the pillars that sustain the South African wine industry: 1659 Award for Visionary Leadership, Growing Inclusivity, Wine Advancement, Viti- and Viniculture, and recognition of the Wine Agri-Worker.  Can’t make the event? You can still join in spirit! Celebrate at home by hosting your own harvest gathering, bring together friends, family, and your favourite South African wines. Raise a glass, share a meal, and toast to the journey of South African wine.  “Each harvest is a reminder of how far we’ve come as an industry,” says Jean Naudé, CEO of Groot Constantia. This event is a moment to come together, reflect on the shared journey, and celebrate the passion and collaboration that continue to move South African wine forward. The Wine Harvest Commemorative Event is made possible through the generous support of Groot Constantia, and Platinum partner Standard Bank, alongside sponsor partners Air France-KLM, the Western Cape Department of Agriculture, South Africa Wine, Die Burger, Seabourne Logistics, SmileFM, and Vinpro.  “Wine is ultimately a story of people, place and patience. Our relationship with the South African wine industry is built on the same principles, long-term partnership and shared ambition. At Standard Bank, we stand alongside farmers and winemakers, helping them finance the next season, invest in the next innovation and build businesses that outlast any single harvest,” says Karel-Günther Jordaan, Standard Bank Regional Agribusiness Manager. PR as SEO on Steroids—How FusionDesign Shapes the Story Before the Internet Does

Carmen Lerm still remembers the early days of marketing, when “storytelling” meant glossy brochures and carefully staged photos. As the founder and visual communication specialist at FusionDesign and West Coast Way, she’s watched the landscape shift — fast. “Today, PR is SEO on steroids,” she says. “It’s not just about looking good; it’s about owning your story online before the internet tells it for you.” Beside her, Zubeida Abrahams, Operations and Production Manager, nods. Sheknows the power of getting it right — and the risks of letting competitors shape yournarrative. “In tourism and hospitality, your story is your currency,” Zubeida explains. “Ifit’s not factually correct, unique, and true to your brand, you’re just another echo in thenoise.” FusionDesign, an Africa-based creative design and PR agency, specialises indestination marketing — the kind that puts travel businesses on the map, literally andfiguratively. For Carmen and Zubeida, success isn’t about duplicating a competitor’sformula. It’s about weaving a fact-driven, visually stunning, and strategically optimisedbrand narrative that search engines — and people — can’t ignore. From premium F&B brands to iconic people-driven destinations, FusionDesign’s integrated approach blends visual design, public relations, and social media mastery. They don’t just promote; they become brand ambassadors, breathing life into campaigns that contribute to South Africa’s tourism success. “AI is making the playing field noisier,” Carmen adds, “but it’s also giving us the tools to be sharper, faster, and more precise.” For FusionDesign, that means harnessing AI to amplify creativity — while keeping the heart of every campaign human. After all, in a world of algorithms, it’s still the right story, told the right way, that wins. If you’re looking for a Creative Design and PR agency with specialist knowledge in the travel and tourism industries, then email Carmen Lerm at carmen@fusiondesign.co.za or Zubeida Abrahams at zubeida@fusiondesign.co.za. Groot Constantia Celebrates 340 Years of Winemaking Legacy

Cape Town, a city known for its breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural tapestry, is home to a collection of iconic destinations known as the Cape Town Big 6. These landmarks offer an immersive experience that captures the essence of the region’s heritage and natural beauty. Among these treasures lies Groot Constantia, a name that stands as an honourable testament to the enduring magnificence of the Constantia Valley—Groot Constantia. This esteemed estate prepares to celebrate its 340th birthday on 13 July 2025. Traversing Through 340 Years of Splendour Groot Constantia is the original wine business in Constantia, a place that’s deeply rooted in the vine and the art of winemaking. It’s a storied land divided and reunited through time, and a testament to the character of the people who have maintained these historic soils. Each milestone is a chapter in the evolving narrative of Constantia’s heritage. To embark on this 340-year journey, guests can purchase the Groot Constantia Visitors Route ticket, which offers a guided or self-guided tour along a specially designed circular path. This ticket allows guests to gain access to the estate’s key attractions, including the Manor House and the renowned Cloete Cellar, home of the Grand Constance, where the essence of the estate’s history is preserved. This educational cellar tour highlights the intricacies of the vinification process at the estate. With a Visitors Route ticket, guests can also enjoy a wine tasting that offers the opportunity to sample five wines of their choice, each showcasing the terroir and the skill of the vintners. To enhance this experience on the Visitors Route, guests receive three complimentary audio walking tours that guide them through the vineyards, the Manor House, and the modern production cellar, providing more valuable insights into the estate’s legacy. Milestones Carved in Stone and Vine Groot Constantia was founded in 1685 and has a rich history. In 1712, an intricate division sculpted the landscape, creating Bergvliet and Hoop Op Constantia to stand alongside the original estate. Like the vines that flourish in the granite-rich soils, Groot Constantia endured, and in 1975, it reclaimed its historic expansiveness, merging sections of Hoop op Constantia and Nova Constantia farms, reuniting lands that had once been part of Simon van de Stel’s 1685 grant. In 1713, the estate’s poetic appeal captured the heart of former sea captain and VOC vice-admiral, Harmens de Marre. He published a poem praising the estate that inspired the famous sweet wine of Constantia – the Grand Constance – marking the beginning of a narrative that would span centuries, harking back to the Napoleonic era, as a wine favoured by royalty with historical prestige. From gold medals at the 1878 Exposition Universelle in Paris to accolades at the Melbourne International Exhibition in 1881, Groot Constantia’s wines danced in the spotlight of global acclaim, enriching the estate’s legacy. A Journey Through Restoration For over 300 years, Groot Constantia faced challenges, including the disastrous Phylloxera attack in the late 19th century. However, even in the face of near destruction, its legendary resilience brought rejuvenation. The significance of Groot Constantia goes beyond its land. In 1925, the Manor House was destroyed by fire. By 1926, it was restored and officially opened as a museum in 1927. And ultimately, in 1984, the homestead and the Groot Constantia estate were declared a National Monument. A Legacy Carried Forward The heartbeat of Groot Constantia reverberates through the 340 years. Recognised by the World Wildlife Fund as a Conservation Champion, the estate’s partnership with the Wine and Agricultural Ethical Trade Association reflects a commitment to the environment. In 1993, the Groot Constantia Act paved the way for a not-for-profit company to own the estate, a testament to the dedication to preserving South African wine culture. Groot Constantia stands out not just as a winery but as a living monument to resilience, innovation, and tradition. Groot Constantia’s story is one of survival and revival, a testament to the enduring spirit of South African viticulture. A visit to this estate (the oldest wine-producing farm in South Africa) is an invitation to learn about the history of the South African wine industry, to walk the pathways of time, and to savour the fruits of the vine. As the 340th anniversary approaches, visiting Groot Constantia is a must to celebrate this milestone, where every glass of wine tells a unique story. Elevating Media Relations in Public Relations

In the ever-evolving landscape of public relations, mastering media relations is much like achieving perfect harmony within an orchestra. The key ingredient? Relevance. This vital element serves as the golden thread that binds successful PR strategies, linking journalists to the stories that resonate most with their audiences. At FusionDesign, we appreciate the intricate art of media relations and are eager to share insights that will elevate your PR efforts to new heights. The Heartbeat of Media Relations: Relevance Relevance truly serves as the foundation of successful media relations. Journalists receive numerous pitches each day, and those that truly catch their eye are the ones that match their beat and resonate with their audience’s interests. A well-targeted pitch is not only appreciated but can also open the door to a meaningful and ongoing relationship. On the other hand, pitches that don’t hit the mark can result in rejection or even being blacklisted. That’s why taking the time to understand your audience and customising your message to suit their needs is so important. Building Bridges, Not Walls “At FusionDesign, we are rooted in strengthening connections between our clients and their audience and simultaneously strengthening our connections with our clients,” says Carmen Lerm, Founder of FusionDesign. “We believe that strong connections build powerful brands.” In PR, the ‘R’ for ‘relations’ is often neglected. About 85% of journalists favour initiating relationships through email introductions. Reaching out with a simple message—regardless of an immediate pitch—can set the stage for future cooperation. Journalists value when PR professionals show genuine interest in their work and preferences. Navigating the Shifting Media Landscape The media world is constantly changing, bringing exciting opportunities and some hurdles like adjusting to new audience habits and fighting misinformation. In this diverse landscape, PR professionals need to stay flexible and proactive, updating their strategies to effectively face these challenges. The growing use of AI, which is becoming a concern for journalists, underlines how important it is for PRs to keep up with technological advances that could change how media is consumed. Meeting Journalists’ Needs: Beyond the Press Release While press releases are still a key tool, sharing exclusive stories and original research can really help a PR professional stand out. Journalists appreciate these insights because they bring new angles and deeper perspectives that make their stories more compelling. When PR teams proactively provide such valuable resources, they become trusted partners in the storytelling journey. Social Media: A PR Powerhouse Social media platforms are more than just tools for engagement—they’re vibrant stages for storytelling. They help PR professionals connect with audiences around the world instantly, expanding their reach and influence. When used effectively, social media can boost PR campaigns to new heights, making them go viral and catching the eye of both consumers and the media. In addition, social media encourages real-time interaction, allowing brands to respond quickly to customer feedback, which helps build trust and credibility. It also plays a key role in managing brand reputation by providing a space to address crises directly and stay transparent. Leveraging Influencer Partnerships Influencer marketing has become a powerful part of PR strategies. When PR teams connect with influencers who share a brand’s values, they can reach loyal audiences and boost both visibility and trust. Social media is an ideal platform for building these relationships, creating benefits for both brands and influencers. Building Lasting Media Partnerships “At FusionDesign, we are proud to be based in the heart of Cape Town, serving the Southern African region since 1999,” says Lerm. “Our commitment to building enduring relationships is reflected in the fact that we still collaborate with some of our original clients. We specialise in diverse fields such as Tourism, Technology, Finance, Health Service, and Energy, providing tailored solutions for our clients.” Successful media relations are about more than just crafting the perfect pitch. They require a holistic approach that combines relevance, relationship-building, and strategic use of social media. At FusionDesign, we believe that every interaction with a journalist is an opportunity to forge a lasting partnership, one that can weather the ever-changing tides of the media landscape. If you’re looking for a Creative Design and PR agency with specialist knowledge in the travel and tourism industries, then contact Carmen Lerm at 086 132 1777 or email carmen@fusiondesign.co.za.

DGB is Transforming Futures With ‘The Travelling Classroom’ In The Cape Winelands Community

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Nelson Mandela Western Cape, South Africa, 2025 – ‘The Travelling Classroom—the school that comes to you’—are two mobile computer and library classrooms that have significantly impacted rural areas in the Cape Winelands District of the Western Cape, South Africa. This inspiring initiative, initiated by leading premium wine producer DGB, has doubled its capacity with the recent unveiling by Minister of Agriculture, John Steenhuisen, of a second state-of-the-art mobile learning facility, which took place at Alfons Primary School in Paarl on 10 February 2025. ‘South Africa faces three major challenges: unemployment, inequality and poverty. I think education is the key to the remedy for each of those three particular problems facing us. Making sure that every child in South Africa, no matter their background, is able to access a good quality education surely has to be one of the easiest ways to level the playing field in our country. The reality is that the government cannot do it on its own. Limited resources mean that we have to partner with the private sector, with organisations like DGB and others, to be able to meet the huge need that we have to make sure that our children are learning and that the opportunities exist for them to succeed and go forth to become the leaders of tomorrow,’ said Steenhuisen. Each classroom travels across the winelands every day and visits each of the 19 schools on the program bi-weekly during school hours. The learning facilities comprise two impressive 15m trailer trucks which cost R4,5 million each to kit out and R750 000 a year to run and operate. Both are fully equipped with a multitude of books as well as a computer center aiming to bridge the educational gap and uplift over 5 000 primary school children and 153 teachers from 19 regional primary schools each year. Over 80% of Grade 4 students at schools in these areas struggle to comprehend what they read. This stark reality is a barrier to their academic success and future potential. ‘The Travelling Classroom’ serves as a beacon of hope, igniting a flame of curiosity in each child it reaches, to nurture children’s educational experiences and address their challenges head-on by bringing vital educational resources and holistic development to the heart of the communities that need them most. ‘The Travelling Classroom’ Key Components:1.Language and Literacy Development: A wide range of educational reading materials are available to encourage love for books and reading. Research shows strong reading skills lead to improved school performance and self-confidence.2.Maths and Computer Literacy: Each classroom is equipped with 20 laptops with internet access and the Green Shoots MCO online mathematics programme is offered. It is aligned with the South African curriculum while addressing the lack of access to technology in communities in need.3.Social Conscience: The third component focuses on nurturing emerging moral values amongst children, emphasising the importance of responsible citizenship. Financial Investment:‘This second Travelling Classroom’ is made possible through a financial investment equally shared between the DGB Charitable Trust, and the DGB Executive Chairman’s family trust Hutch – Giving Children A Chance Trust. It is further backed by leading donors, Daimler Truck, Ardagh Glass Packaging and Rhenus Logistics, as well as an ever-expanding network of passionate individuals, businesses and organisations who share a common ethos – ‘if we can change the beginning of the story, we can change the whole story.’ ‘To replicate and further grow the drive to improve early childhood development in underprivileged communities we invite donors to join and help pave the way to brighter futures,’ explains Tim Hutchinson, Executive Chairman at DGB. ‘If we can see children progress to higher education while remembering the lessons they’ve learnt at our facility, then we will all be better people for it.’ DGB is South Africa’s premium wine producer and distributor, with a heritage deeply rooted in the Cape Winelands and has always been passionate about driving positive change through initiatives like this. Ree du Toit, the Production Director of DGB, states, ‘We are dedicated to transforming education by providing essential tools and knowledge to the youth of the Cape Winelands. Our commitment is to inspire students to overcome the barriers of poverty and resource scarcity and to help them write a new story for themselves and their community.’ Principals Applaud the Mobile Centre’s Impact On EducationThe impact of ‘The Travelling Classroom’ is already being felt in the community, with school principals expressing their gratitude and seeing tangible improvements in student engagement and performance. Mr Solomons, Principal of Alfons Primary School, praised the project for providing excellent learning tools, while Mr Forbes, Principal of Rondeheuwel Primary School, Hermon, noted the significant improvement in attendance on days when the mobile classroom visits. Kinderland Akademie’s Role In Empowering the YouthKinderland Akademie, the registered community outreach of the Kinderland Trust, coordinates the day-to-day activities. The dedicated project team, led by Dr Thys Smith and Mrs Ilse Human, oversees the logistics, educational oversight, organisational management, and administrative support, ensuring the seamless operation and success of the project. Through the unwavering investment of expertise and commitment of all role players, ‘The Travelling Classroom’ looks forward to growing from strength to strength. To share in its successes, DGB invites organisations, government, trusts, foundations and individuals to consider joining hands and partnering with this initiative as it plays its part in transforming the educational landscape for young learners.
